Do you need a smart home hub?
For most renters, no. A lot of the best renter gear connects straight to WiFi. Here's when a hub is worth it and when it's just clutter.
When you don't need one
No-hub WiFi plugs, bulbs, and cameras work on their own. A smart speaker covers voice control.
When a hub helps
Some low-power devices (certain sensors, button pushers for remote control, Zigbee/Thread gear) need a hub to reach the internet.
Keep it simple
Start hub-free with WiFi devices; add a hub only when a specific device you want requires one.
